Is It a Coincidence That the Brain Releases DMT at the Point of Death ?

One of the most fascinating mysteries in neuroscience is this:

Some researchers have found evidence that the brain may release a surge of DMT (Dimethyltryptamine) around the time of death—one of the most powerful psychedelic compounds known to exist naturally in living organisms.

Now consider this.

People who have taken DMT often describe leaving their bodies, entering impossibly vivid worlds, encountering intelligent beings, experiencing timelessness, and returning convinced that what they experienced was “more real than reality.”

Strangely, many people who have had near-death experiences (NDEs) describe remarkably similar events: floating above their bodies, moving through tunnels of light, meeting deceased relatives, overwhelming feelings of peace, profound life reviews, and returning permanently transformed.

Coincidence ?

Or are these two experiences pointing toward the same hidden phenomenon from different directions?

Perhaps DMT is simply the brain’s final chemical response to extreme stress.

Or perhaps it is something else entirely—a biological key that unlocks a level of consciousness our ordinary waking minds cannot access.

Science has not reached a consensus. While studies in animals have detected brief increases in DMT around death, there is still no definitive evidence that the human brain releases enough DMT to fully explain near-death experiences. Other scientists argue that oxygen deprivation, changes in brain activity, and other neurochemicals may play major roles.

But the questions remain.

Why do so many people return from near-death experiences with strikingly similar stories despite different cultures and beliefs?

Why do DMT users often describe places and entities that seem strangely consistent across unrelated individuals ?

Could consciousness be produced by the brain… or does the brain simply tune into it, like a radio receiving a signal ?

And if consciousness can exist independently of the body, what does that mean for death itself ?

The deeper we investigate the human brain, the more we realize that our greatest mystery may not be the universe around us—but consciousness itself.

Sometimes the most important discoveries begin with questions we cannot yet answer.

What do you think ? Is DMT merely the brain’s chemistry… or could it be the doorway to something beyond our current understanding?
