The Rarest Form of Ayahuasca You’ve Never Heard Of (And Why It Might Be Perfect for You)
You’ve probably heard of ayahuasca by now.
The Amazonian plant medicine that’s crossed from indigenous ceremony into mainstream consciousness, covered by everyone from The New York Times to your friend who “came back a completely different person” after a retreat in Peru.
But here’s what almost nobody talks about: there are actually two forms of traditional ayahuasca. And 99% of people, including most who’ve already sat in ceremony, have only ever experienced one of them.
The other is called crudo.
What Is Crudo Ayahuasca?
The word “crudo” comes from Spanish. It means raw.
Most ayahuasca is cooked, the vine and leaves are slow-boiled over an open fire for hours, sometimes days, reducing into a thick, dark, intensely bitter brew. This is the medicine most people know. The one that typically tastes like liquid earth and hits you like a freight train of insight.
Crudo is different.
It’s the uncooked version, prepared without heat, more like a cold brew or an infusion. The result is a lighter-colored drink with a noticeably softer taste. Almost like water compared to its cooked counterpart.
But don’t let that fool you.
Crudo is still powerful. It’s simply a different kind of powerful.
Why Is Crudo So Rare?
There are a few reasons most people never encounter crudo ayahuasca, even at legitimate retreats.
First, it’s geographically specific. Crudo is primarily a Colombian tradition, particularly among a handful of indigenous tribes. You’re not going to find it in most Peruvian or Brazilian ceremonies, which dominate the global ayahuasca retreat market.
Second, it’s time-sensitive. Because it isn’t cooked and preserved through heat, crudo ferments quickly. It has a short window. You can’t ship it, store it, or scale it the way paste medicine gets shipped from South America to Europe in dehydrated form. It has to be fresh, and it has to be used quickly.
Third, very few people carry the knowledge. The tradition of preparing crudo properly belongs to specific lineages. It’s not something you can learn from a weekend workshop or a YouTube tutorial. The preparation is as important as the plants themselves.
This makes crudo one of the most authentic, least commodified forms of plant medicine available today.
Cooked vs. Crudo: What’s Actually Different?
Think of it this way:
Cooked ayahuasca is fire. It burns through what no longer serves you, old patterns, suppressed grief, calcified beliefs. The experience tends to be more intense, more confrontational, and more physically demanding (yes, la purga is more likely). It’s the medicine that pulls you into the depths and makes you work.
Crudo is water. It washes. It flows. The experience tends to feel gentler on the body, more spacious, less overwhelming. The insights arrive differently, not as lightning bolts, but as slow, quiet clarity.
Neither is better. They’re different tools for different moments.
Who Is Crudo For?
This is where it gets practical, because not everyone should start with the same medicine.
Crudo may be right for you if:
- You’re new to ayahuasca and want a gentler entry point that doesn’t overwhelm your nervous system
- You’re physically sensitive and concerned about the intensity of the purge process
- You’ve done cooked ayahuasca before and want to experience the medicine in a different register
- You’re drawn to subtlety, the kind of healing that washes rather than burns
- Your intention is more about emotional clarity than ego dissolution
Cooked may be right for you if:
- You’re ready to go deep and aren’t afraid of discomfort
- You’ve done plant medicine before and want a more immersive experience
- The work you’re bringing is heavy, grief, trauma, addiction, deep-seated patterns
The honest answer? We don’t always know which is right until we meet you, understand your history, and hear your intention. That’s why the conversation before the ceremony matters as much as the ceremony itself. Learn more about what our retreats look like.
Why We Offer Both
At Mahadevi Ayahuasca, we work with a primary curandero from the Kamëntsá tribe in Colombia, one of the few remaining lineages that still prepares and works with crudo alongside traditional cooked medicine.
This isn’t a marketing differentiator. It’s simply what authentic Colombian Amazonian tradition looks like.
Offering both means we can actually meet each person where they are, not force everyone through the same experience because it’s easier to manage.
Some guests start with crudo and move to cooked medicine the following night. Others stay with crudo for their entire stay. Some come specifically because of the cooked medicine and discover crudo is what their body actually needed.
The medicine knows. Our job is to create the conditions where you can listen.

The Question You Should Be Asking Any Retreat
Here’s what most people don’t know to ask when they’re evaluating ayahuasca retreats:
Is your medicine fresh and prepared on-site, or is it rehydrated from paste?
The majority of retreats, especially outside South America, are serving paste medicine. Real ayahuasca that was boiled down, dehydrated for transport, then reconstituted with water. It’s technically authentic. But it’s a different experience from fresh medicine prepared by someone who knows each plant personally.
Fresh medicine, prepared by someone carrying a living lineage, is rare. That’s worth knowing. See how we source and prepare our medicine.
